St Clair is about as uniform as suburbs get out this way, the whole area was built out in one go through the 1970s and 80s after the original developer went under and the state took over the job. That means almost every home is roughly the same age, and it’s a vintage I know well.
At 45 to 55 years old, these are switchboards that were built to a completely different standard, ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers and no safety switches were the norm, not the exception.
It also means a lot of these homes are now going through renovations, and that’s the other job that comes up a lot in St Clair, updating the power and lighting while walls are already open.
St Clair gets the same searing western Sydney summers as the rest of Penrith, no sea breeze this far inland. I’m based in Emu Plains, close enough to get out to an urgent job in St Clair quickly rather than you waiting on someone coming from the other side of Sydney. A switchboard upgrade is the single biggest thing I’d suggest checking on a home this age.
